caused corruption & spilled blood is a soundtrack to the tragic drama of humanity’s fatal flaws. inspired by an anecdote shared across the abrahamic faiths, the release is a meditation on humanity’s destructive potential. it forces us to confront the ugly side of our nature and pose the question, were the angels right to fear our creation would cause corruption and spill blood? same script, no solution provides one answer. the sonification of “ordo ab chao,” the opening track guides the listener through the process of public manipulation, providing a backtrack to the obstruction of the truth for personal gain. third degree arson touches on humanity’s second vice: the affinity for intentional destruction. is there hope against these demons of our own nature? no divine savior suggests not. if we cannot rely on divine intervention for our salvation, that leaves only ourselves to overpower our own vices. yet with the discord of the final track, sects, the listener is reminded of the deep cultural fissures that keep us from doing so. the caused corruption & spilled blood ep is a powerfully provocative examination of human nature, a compelling first release from the collaborative efforts of chafik chennouf & katsunori sawa.

the next chapter in shaw cuts comes from russian duo poima, who celebrate their debut record twin blades of doom – a fierce revenge mission and hunt after the infamous ghost gang. the pursuit opens with triglau , its linear machine groove levelling a fraction of the ghost gang. heads roll on a crimson floor. teaming up with mysterious masked warrior inland, triglau morphs into a hypnotic trip. pushing drum rhythms and swirling pads combine with nasty noise elements, propelling the hunt. the remaining enemy members are already hatching their next evil move. on the way to lu he village where the ghost gang plans its next assault, analogue break-beat punches and swinging percussions weave a menacing tapestry of sound, crushing the bones of rogue creatures in its path. serbian slayer regen arrives in force for the final showdown at qi dou town where the ghost gang plans a huge heist. armed with atmospheric pads and a soaring drum crescendo, his interpretation of bones ends the ghost gang tyranny in one fatal sweep. and the saga goes on...

p.o.s steps even further into genre-blurring territory with chill, dummy, his first official release with doomtree records since the release of his debut album ipecac neat. the album reflects on the past three years since a near-fatal kidney transplant sidelined him from making music and deals with the the difficulties of trying to maintain peace of mind and navigate through a confusing world, which is becoming increasingly more alienating. p.o.s’ production fingerprints are all over this one as he maneuvers through a wide range of sprawling beats contributed by himself, usual suspects lazerbeak and ryan olson, and newcomers cory grindberg and makr. several friends touch down along the way to offer up biting commentary and varying points of view (allan kingdom, astronautalis, kathleen hanna, justin vernon, open mike eagle, busdriver, and lady midnight, to name a few), but the album never suffers from an oversaturation of scattered voices, instead using everyone’s individual ethos and strengths to build a unifying call to arms. the result is p.o.s’ most bold, honest, and daring work to date, so chill, dummy.

the pieces were created as structured improvisations using a monophonic synth (primarily) along with a yamaha dx7 (borrowed from a friend) and possibly a guitar. recording was made on an older otari mx5050 1/2 8 track. mixing was done on a tascam m-50 console and a revox a77 1/4 machine. i recall the project happened in two bursts: i did half of it in september 85, then i finished up and edited the album together in december 85. i dont really recall making copies for anyone. i think i played it for a dozen people and that was it. just forgot about it. i remember jeff ament from pearl jam (green river back then) came by while i had it playing on my home stereo. he asked what it was and said he liked it. surprised me a little. with regard to overall aesthetic: i like the sound of machinery, but i enjoy the fragility of human error and human instinct. i like to put things into motion then climb aboard and drive. i can’t play an instrument (in the classical sense) for the life of me, so i’ve always just played things that are mostly choice rather than a convolution of style and technique. i guess you call that the brian eno school of rock.

a complex web – the story of dive position and the shining path ... began in 1982 when peter miller (aka dr. william s ray – vocals, tapes, guitar) met andrew millar (aka maurice spectograph the nose-y pieman – program execution) in gold coast, australia. while sharing a similar taste in music, they decided to form a band, so dive position was born. equipped with a korg synthesiser and tascam 4-track recorder, they -wanted to have the sound of kraftwerk, the groove of can, and the menace of throbbing gristle-, ending up with -a cross of suicide and the residents-, as peter recalls. in a local record shop they met stig andre leonardson (aka vincent blackshadow), who joined the duo on percussion and drum machine programming. their motto was -now is then-. dive position then became the fatal charm around 1984, and the fatal charm became the shining path who eventually released their only album -basic training manual- in an edition of only 250 copies, most probably in 1986. the band then started to drift apart, and shortly after andrew sadly passed away – this compilation -now is then- comprised of previously unreleased dive position and the shining path material is dedicated to his memory.

ursa’s reef is a late 80’s traveller and surfer wandering endlessly in the secluded raves of goa, searching for his own soul while dancing in abandon to the proto-trance journeys of goa gil. brought up in sintra, portugal, by a family of uptight catholic hypocrites, ur goes rogue in his early 20’s, seduced by the esoteric teachings of levi, pessoa, crowley and israel regardie while keeping an unhealthy obsession with roxy music. he is also a fictional, made up persona - a musical heteronym - of lisbon-based dj and producer marco rodrigues, mostly known for his work under the name photonz. together with his friend jose acid - a musical heteronym of joao ervedosa aka shcuro - he makes one last trip to goa that could prove fatal.

after a strong first release contort yourself returns with events at the fatal party which comes over more as a description than a title, brimming with a bubbling sense of tension and fear. hamburg duo fallbeil kick things off in impressive style with a crunchy acid monster which twists and turns followed by two killer proto-techno cuts from legendary french industrial band die form from their 1985 tape hurt. here we find ourselves in a unsettling scenario with metallic voices scowling over clanging machines and guitar feedback in an unhinged way. the mysterious slugbug (l.i.e.s./russian torrent versions) starts the flip with goback, a creeping acidic beast moving unstoppably forward as a reverberating voice ripples throughout. any calm is then shattered by ibm a.k.a. jamal moss whose remix of die form hammers home a tough seven minutes of mangled synths, bubbling acid and thundering drums. a highly recommended, intense journey.
